Growing Instructional Leaders
Recently we developed a course for a professional organization that introduced us to the research of Meredith Honig. This research was exciting for us as it reaffirms the work we have done and are currently involved in at both the school and district level. Growing Instructional Leaders is important work and needs to be intentional. Gains will not be seen over night and this work needs to occur right from the top down. Central office leaders need to be ready to mentor and coach school leaders.
"In order to see real gains, district leaders need to address the entire central office's performance, asking themselves: What would the office look like if it were truly designed to support instructional leadership, high-quality teaching, and — ultimately — deeper learning?" — Meredith I. Honig, 2015
Currently we are working with five high school administrative teams in supporting their growth as instructional leaders. Through mentorship, observations and dialogue we are supporting these leaders to dig deep, seek clarity and understanding of the issues and the abilities of their teachers to provide high quality instruction.
In our previous school divisions we took a "system" approach to instructional leadership development. Our central office leaders were provided the professional learning (both individual and group) to build their abilities to: be instructional leaders, coach and support school based leaders in their instructional leadership. This work was intentionally planned and delivered with the goal of ensuring high quality learning for all students.

“They are genuinely committed to success for us...”
My school leadership team and myself have had the good fortune to work with Rita and Shan of JAM Consulting for this school year. They graciously and generously bring their wisdom gained over years of school and system leadership to our school and our leadership challenges. They are genuinely committed to success for us as school leaders, for our staff and, of course, for our students. This is evident in non-judgmental advice, feedback and support they provide. We are a better leadership team and I am most definitely a better school leader as a result of their support and guidance. Thank you Rita and Shan!
